Hydro Poles to be removed
09 September 2009

Each year, many thousands of visitors to the Isle of Skye stand on the old bridge at Sligachan and photograph the Cuillin.

These visitors will now have to revisit the island and retrace their footsteps if they want to update their photographic collections and capture a new view that has not been seen for almost sixty years!
Because of the intervention of a voluntary group from the island, a number of electricity poles which marr this classic view will be removed and replaced by an underground cable. Since the electrification of Skye’s outlying areas the poles have marched across the moor between the old bridge at Sligachan and the Cuillin. They have blotted what many regard as the island’s most spectacular scene, but AS OF 21st September the poles will be removed by Scotland and Southern Energy in a gesture worth £80.000. This welcome move comes as a result of 5 years planning and hard work by the Collie and Mackenzie Sculpture Group who have been in consultation with Scottish Southern Energy and the JMT.

The group are seeking to improve the environment around Sligachan and pave the way for a sculpture which will celebrate the achievements of two men who climbed and named the peaks of the Cuillin, local Sconser man John Mackenzie and his internationally renowned climbing partner Norman Collie.
Both figures are to  be placed on a natural boulder stack looking towards their beloved  Cuillin. The sculpture will sit on land which has been donated by the JMT.

The coming down of the poles will see the official launch of a worldwide appeal in which people can donate bronze to the sculpture, to be a part of history in the making see the Certificates and Donations page of this site.
